This Wednesday, the 25th, is one of Thailand’s more beautiful celebrations. Loy Krathong is a merit making ceremony held on the evening of the full moon in November. A Krathong is a floating, decorative basket with incense sticks, candles and three coins for good luck. They are placed into the river and floated downstream. The Krathong is made from sliced banana tree trunk of stale bread. Styrofoam Krathongs are banned in most places. Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai is the best place to witness this event as they add fireworks and fire lanterns into the mix. Here in Bang Niang there will be celebrations on all of the streams and rivers in the area.
